“ We're so sad to hear Gumbo King will be closing, we were fortunate to live so close by all of this time. We thought it was a convenient location; next door to Cannabis club and Taqueria-which makes sense for this area. We order to go, everything is seasoned well; Gumbo, fried snapper, yams, Mac and cheese, Turkey greens, and garlic noodles ALL very good, seasoned very well. I personally prefer thicker noodles but that's just me. Pick up is always quick but we order at 4:30, 5pm. Going to miss this place a lot. Very unfortunate. ”
“ Absolutely amazing. The neighborhood was a little sketch but Gumbo King is truly a hidden gem. The food, music, service, and atmosphere are reasons to visit this amazing restaurant. The main chef came out and greeted us. The staff made us feel welcomed right away. We tried a little bit of everything-gumbo, fried catfish, red beans and rice, yams (super candied) banana pudding, peach cobbler and a King's Collins cocktail. I'm a fan! ”
“ The food was as excellent as it sounded on the menu. I ordered the king's gumbo; it was excellent, had the right texture/consistency and tasted great. I added shrimp for an additional charge, and the quality/portion of the shrimp did not disappoint (not to mention, the complimentary cornbread added the perfect twist to it all). Aside from the food, the service was equally exceptional. From beginning to end it was prompt, attentive and personable, and made for a truly pleasant experience. Five stars all around, and I will happily return to patronize this fine establishment again! (and I recommend you do the same) ”
“ I give it a an extra star because the service is amazing. You're greeted with right away, it's so welcoming. I ordered the Princess salmon and shrimp with royal sauce choices ; greens and Alfredo. And sample sides of ; red beans and rice, and cabbage. The sides all the tasted the same to me but the greens were straight once I put a packet of hot sauce in them, . I suggest to tweak the recipe, adding vinegar and switching from white salt to pink Himalayan salt which is alkaline. The cabbage try adding a little bit of a sweetener to balance out the bacon and pepper or lighten up on the black pepper. As well as these red beans and rice throw the recipe in trash and redo this one. I prefer Popeyes. ”
“ Attention Kings & Queens: There are some good places to eat in not so great areas of town. Gumbo King is one of those places, located in the middle of an old tiny strip mall on Northgate Blvd. Don't let the outside turn you away from trying some delicious soul food! We were welcomed in and seated right away but the host took our party of 4 to a table with only 3 chairs. LOL No worries. I still liked the vibe: small, casual, and simply decorated with some cool artwork/ posters and R&B and old school hip hop being played a little loudly. Also the servers address you as "king" or "queen," which I loved. They brought our waters without straws and without the sliced lemons we asked for. I didn't like that they were out of straws, but luckily we had our own in the car. My friend had ordered a blended drink, which definitely needed a straw. I wanted a watermelon lemon drop but they were out of watermelon. I ended up getting the blackberry lemon drop. Pro tip: They have about 5 cocktails that are only $5 when added to an entree. We waited almost half an hour to get our drinks. There was a big party seated when we got there, so not sure if our drink order got lost or what. Anyways the sweet female manager (I'm assuming she was the manager) came over and apologized for the wait and said our drinks were on the house. At least the rocky start got smoothed out, and from that point on, it was a better dining experience. They have a "rotating menu" of specialties only available on certain days. Saturday was "fried ribs," so I already knew what I wanted! But sadly they were out! (Note to self: go or order early if you want something from the rotating menu.) Instead I got the fried pork chops that were recommended by a friend and chose fried cabbage and mac n cheese as my sides. We had to try their signature "gumbo wings" that I ordered as an appetizer but pretty much came at the same time as our entrees. Everyone else ordered the fried catfish, fried chicken, rice & gravy, yams, greens, and the alfredo fettucine. The gumbo wings were smackin'!!!! Large pieces of fried drums and flats that were smothered with the gumbo "roux," basically like a gravy with bits of chicken and sausage from the gumbo. I loved the pork chops the most! Super crunchy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside. Everyone loved their fried fish and chicken. I say "fried king" fits them well! Not that there wasn't already a ton of food on our plates, but I asked if they had cornbread, and glad I did. It was buttery sweet, moist, and even though the bottom was a little burnt, it was still one of the best I've ever had! All of the sides were ok but my cousin raved about the fettucine alfredo. I'll have to order that next time, maybe with the fried lobster, which also came highly recommended. Support black-owned, small, and local! ”
“ It'd a nice size hole-in-the-wall located in a strip mall. Parking spaces are tight but parking is plentiful. There are lots of tables and the bathroom appeared clean. Our server was a little forgetful but was fine otherwise. The food came out quickly and was fresh and hot. I had Queen's Gumbo and a King Henney cocktail. I really liked the unexpected corn bread appetizer served before the meal. It was good but could have been better warmed. The server made sure I had a piece to take home with my leftovers. Yummy. Now my dish was good and there was plenty. It had beef hot links, chicken, rice, etc., and I added shrimp for an extra $10. Now it had a nice spicy kick but it was obvious the meat and seafood weren't cooked in the broth because it lacked that flavor and there was no gumbo filet seasoning. My drink was good but not strong. My son had gumbo fries and it was pretty good. The roux was flavorful like the gumbo could have been so I'll have that next time. Overall a good dining experience and with a couple of tweaks it could be the bomb! Definitely plan to visit again. ”
“ I am really glad that I finally dined in at Gumbo King. Our server was affable and welcoming. She provided exceptional service and checked on us several times. The cornbread is probably the best I've had in the Sacramento area. It was not dry compared to similar establishments. The fried lobster with the Alfredo sauce is a must order. I enjoyed the Gumbo wings; however, I prefer it without the roux sauce. The Queen's gumbo was just okay. I've had better at other establishments. The flavor wasn't that great. The Queen's Betty chops were really good as I like fried pork chops. It had the right amount of crispness without being dry and difficult to chew. My favorite entree was the prince crab and shrimp. The sautéed seafood with the garlic sauce was delicious. I will dine in again, likely on a Sunday to try the ox tails. ”
